The St. Albert Sabres are the first team to have their name etched on the Alberta Elite Hockey League’s U15 AAA Provincial Championship trophy.

The Sabres defeated the Okotoks Oilers 5-1 in Fort Saskatchewan on Sunday to claim the provincial banner. The Sherwood Park Flyers took bronze earlier in the day with a 4-1 victory over the Airdrie Xtreme.

The tournament, hosted by the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers, was not only the first since the formation of the Alberta Elite Hockey League, but also the first time the league championship was played in a five-team tournament format, rather than a best-of-five series between the top team from the North and South divisions.

The 2021-22 AEHL season wraps up with one final tournament, as the U16 AAA Provincial Championships are set for April 7-10, hosted by the GPAC Storm in Grande Prairie. The Fort Sask Rangers, CAC, Calgary Royals and NWCAA Flames have all earned a berth in the tournament through league playoffs.
